Upgrade to Real ID or Enhanced (Amendment or Renewal)

*You do not have to worry about the 5/7/25 REAL ID deadline unless you are flying within the country on or after that date. The Real ID or Enhanced License/Permit/Non-Driver ID will take 2 weeks to receive in the mail after processing.

To get the federally approved document you need to bring in:

1. Proof of Citizenship or Lawful Status:
* U.S. Certified Birth Certificate issued by a state or local government (cannot accept hospital-issued birth certificates; cannot accept photocopies)
* U.S. Passport or Passport Card (current, not expired)
* Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship (N-550, N-560, N-561, N-570)
* U.S. Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240, DS-1350, F-545)
* Foreign Passport with a valid Visa & I-94, valid I-551 stamp, or a valid I-551 statement on the Visa
* Unexpired Permanent Resident Card (I-551)
* Employment Authorization Card (I-688B, I-766) with photo accompanied by documentation approved by Department of Homeland Security (e.g., I-797/I-589) that specifically states valid U.S. lawful status as defined by 6 C.F.R. 37.3

2. Proof of Name Change:
(Needed only if the name on your birth certificate or passport does not match the name on your license, permit, or non-driver ID. If multiple name changes, you may have to bring in all of the name change proofs for each name change in order to link the names together; unless the name change document lists the name that is on your birth cert or passport and also lists the name that is on your current license.)
* U.S. Certified Marriage Certificate issued from a state or local government (cannot accept religious documents)
* U.S. Certified Divorce Decree
* U.S. Certified Court Issued Name Change Decree

3. Proof of Social Security:
* U.S. Social Security Card
* Social Security Ineligibility Letter (only accepted for REAL ID; must be issued within 30 days of applying for REAL ID)
- If you have misplaced your social security card and you have a valid NYS photo document, you may submit one of the following documents instead of the card.
* Federal or NYS Income Tax W-2 (must display your full social security number; receives if employed)
* SSA-1099 - Annual Social Security Statement (must display your full social security number; receives if collecting SS)
* Federal or NYS Income Tax or Earning Statement 1099 (must show full social security number; receives if self-employed)

4. Proofs of NYS Residency:
2 proofs of residency are required. Proofs must show your physical residential NYS address/where you live; can only use 1 from each category; must be issued within 1 year)
* Bank Statement
* Utility Bill
* Property Tax Statement
* Mortgage Statement
* Residential Lease
* Credit Card Statement
* Computer Printed Pay Stub
* W-2
* NYS Photo Document (if correct address printed on front of license)
